Al and his wife have done foster care for local no-kill cat shelters, and public education on responsible care of pocket pets such as fancy rats, guinea pigs and chinchillas. Freestyle Gifts also specializes in up-cycling vintage paper goods into eclectic and fun gift items that are also functional. The overall style of the shop is fresh and modern with great attention to detail. Freestyle Gifts proprietor, Kate Maloney, has been personally helping animals since a very young age. She became passionate about it once she began finding newborn birds that had gotten kicked out of their nests. She would carefully nurse them back to health when possible and then take them to the country to release them. Currently Kate donates 15% of the purchase price of select items in her gift shop to her local no-kill animal shelter, the Benicia-Vallejo Humane society. Store: Lacewood At Lacewood, Akire's aim is to include a wide variety of small extravagances - handknitted lace, handspun yarns, angora items & yarn from her own overindulged bunny, handmade journals, handmade envelopes, & who knows what else! But her favorite offering here is also the simplest - elegantly and intricately designed wooden spoons. So make a wish, stir a pot, and serve up some magic for the ones you love. Enjoy. She also does INSCRIPTIONS & CUSTOM ORDERS! :-) Akire currently lives with one cat, one rabbit, and one husband. All three critters make her enormously happy! Her rabbit, an angora house rabbit named Spot, is litterbox trained, and hops around the house playing with the cat, Hiro. Spot gets a haircut every 3 months and Akire spins his wool into very very soft yarn, and knits it into lace. Hiro helps by batting at the spinning wheel and sleeping on the knitting. Some of Spot's yarn and lace items are available from time to time in Akire's store, Lacewood. Store: Liz's Locker (DzyMsLizzy) DzyMsLizzy's store sells a wide variety of items, and so is included under the "Everything Else" category because there is no one category that is all-encompasing. Her store is like a department store, selling hand-painted ceramics, vintage jewelry and sheet music, hand-made jewelry, some needlepoint coasters and other yarn crafts, vintage children's books, antique glassware and some miscellaneous items. The mix changes quite a bit, as many are OOAK items, so check back often. Liz, (aka Dizzy Miss Lizzy) has had animals most of her life. There were dogs in the picture during her growing-up years, and when her children were small, she acquired her first cat. Now, there are 4 cats in the household, ranging from a 10-year-old with epilepsy to a newcomer just over 1 year old. Three are rescued from being sentenced to a shelter and possible euthanasia, while the newcomer wandered into the yard and adopted the family on his own. In the 1980's, Liz volunteered as a docent with the Peninsula Humane Society, visiting schools and bringing a dog to the classrooms to teach children about proper treatment of our animal friends. She also spent time at the shelter socializing dogs and cats. Originally trained as a photographer, her shop started selling just that and over time her creative endeavors have expanded to include multiple other mediums. A gallery director by day and an animal crusader by night, Nicole is on the board of directors of C.A.R.E South Cost -The Center for Animal Rescue and Education an animals rescue located in New Bedford, MA. It is a new branch off of an organization that dealt solely with cats, but will now deal with cats, dogs and other animal victims of abuse neglect, forclosure, homelessness and illness. She lives in New Bedford, MA with her three cats, 2 sugar gliders, 1 rabbit and 3 very hardy 2 year old goldfish. 10% of all proceeds from the store will go to animal charities. 100% of all the bag sales will go to C.A.R.E South Coast to help with start-up costs. In doing this many cats have come to reside at the farm that are not adoptable due to age, health, or temperament .
